Chester Conference 2018

As you have probably seen on the 'News' part of the website, the 2018 conference - Nature versus Human Innovation - will take place between the 22nd and 24th June in Chester and booking are now live. Please go to conference booking to find out more about the conference agenda, the wraparound events and workshops and to book your tickets.

Many of the wraparound events and workshops have limited places available so please do book as soon as possible to make sure you get your first choice of events.

You can find out even more about the conference and make contact with other members who are attending on our Facebook Group page.  If you are not a member of group, just click on the link and ask to join and we will give you access.  Let us all know you will be coming!

If you are travelling alone and would like to see if other members would like to share accomadation, or just to see where other members are staying to book the same hotel then the Chester Facebook Group is a great place to get in touch with other people.

The Chester Conference planning group are working extremely hard to finalise the details and have put togther a fantastic programme, so do join us if you can.

Raising awareness of NWR

It’s the start of a new year so it’s a good time to look at membership numbers for 2016. Between 2007 and 2015 the numbers of members have remained fairly constant at between 7000 and 7300. Unfortunately during the last year numbers have dipped below 7000. So how can we reverse this trend?

One idea for growing our membership that members often propose is more national publicity. They argue that raising our profile will make it easier to ‘sell’ NWR to a new generation of women. After all we know that women still value the friendship of other women and enjoy a good exchange of ideas. But our experience over the last five years suggests that national publicity may not be the answer – at least not within our resources!

During this time we have tried national advertising in women’s magazines, printing extra magazines for distribution in public places, put on regional events, increased our social media presence, cultivated PR contacts, paid for banner ads and contributed to area events eg Christmas tree festivals. All these experiments have taken staff time and some of our limited budget. Of course we will continue with some of these activities and also try other initiatives. But obviously all this effort has not paid off yet. Now you could argue that any awareness raising exercise takes time – months if not years – to have an impact and every little mention of NWR helps. However, it maybe that answer lies closer to home.

We know that most members join NWR groups through word of mouth, from a suggestion of a friend or relative. So, if we each mention NWR once a month to women outside our immediate circle, how powerful that would be! Also, if each group recruited one or two new members in the next twelve months we might get that membership figure over 7000 again. Remember that posters, bookmarks and other materials are available from the office and you can pass on your magazine.

With best wishes for 2018 to all members.

Calling all quizzers... NWR needs you!

You should have received an email about about the NWR 'Eggheads' Team.  We are hoping to apply for the next round of filming to see if NWR are smart enough to beat the Eggheads (I know we are!) but we need to get a team together before the 5th December; less than a week away!

Please contact Sara Jane, our website and publicity coordinator ASAP if you would like to take part... and if you are not a whizz at quizzing then make sure you encourage anyone else in your group you think fits the bill!

If you didn't receive the email and want more information please contact SJ by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. - but be quick!

A new addition to our social media family!

We are now officially on Pinterest! We have boards on inspirational women, books, travel, Lincoln (where our 2017 National Conference will be held) and more. Over time we will be adding more boards that we hope will feed your curiosity. So follow us on Pinterest and start pinning!

For those of you who have only heard of Pinterest but don't really know what it is, Pinterest is basically a free website where users can upload, save, sort, and manage images — known as pins — and other media content (eg, videos) through collections known as pinboards. It's free to use and requires that you register.

Go have a look at our Pinterest boards now and start your journey, or begin by reading up on how to use Pinterest.

There's a new Facebook group – and website forum category – in town!

We've added yet another Facebook group to our repertoire and this one is called NWR Publicity. Those of you who steer clear of Facebook, worry not, because we have also set it up as a forum category on our website.

Have you contacted local press for some NWR publicity? Then tell us all about it. We want to know what you are doing to help spread the word about NWR and if you received any press coverage. It could get really interesting to see what different groups are doing in this regard. And if you do get coverage, please also email the This email address is being protected from spambots. The homepage is our ‘shop window’ and we need your brilliant photos of days out, talks, meetings etc. We are looking for photos with verve and colour. Consider that non-members will see this too (does your photo grab attention and make people want to join us?). The photos need to be landscape and don’t forget to supply us with a fun caption so anyone coming to the site – member or non-member – will know what they are looking at. Get snapping!
