Co-ordinators and Financial Manager

We have two hard-working co-ordinators and an equally hard-working finance manager who are based at home and between them cover a vast range of tasks for the organisation.

Kathryn Buckman: Membership Co-ordinator

I have been a member of NWR for 23 years and live in Alrewas, a village just north of Lichfield in the Midlands.

As Membership Co-ordinator of NWR, my job entails:

  • 20 hours a week, working from home
  • Responsibility for all aspects of Membership
  • Line-management of the NWR Office in Norwich, which I visit three or four times a year.
  • Meetings with the Trustees, Communications Co-ordinator and Finance manager, four times a year
  • Presenting an annual report on Membership at the AGM
  • Collaboration with Mary Dodkins, Communications Co-ordinator, to produce Handbooks, Publicity material, advice and support packs, and researched resources for themed evenings, website quizzes, and annual themes
  • Collaboration with Nicole Iles, Finance Manager, over aspects of NWR's budget
  • Co-ordination of Events
  • Management of the subsidy received from the Department for Information, Universities and Skills

Mary Dodkins: Communications Co-ordinator

I have been a member of NWR for 15 years. I work from home in Hemel Hempstead. I became Editor of The Register in 1996 and National Organiser as well in 1997. In 1999 I became Marketing Co-ordinator, now Communications Co-ordinator.

As Communications Co-ordinator my job entails:

  • 20 hours a week, working from home
  • Produce and edit the Magazines (The Register) , Newsletters and Annual Report
  • Responsible for the Annual National Conference
  • Responsibility for Communications, internal & external e.g. the website www.nwr.org.uk
  • Maintain contact and encourage Overseas Groups
  • Presenting an annual report on Communications at the AGM.
  • Meetings with the Trustees, Membership Co-ordinator and Finance Manager, four times a year.
  • Collaboration with Kathryn Buckman, Membership Co-ordinator, to produce Handbooks, Publicity material, advice and support packs, and researched resources for themed evenings, website quizzes and annual themes
  • Collaboration with Nicole Iles, Finance Manager, over aspects of NWR's budget.

Samantha Taylor: Finance Manager

My responsibility is looking after NWR's finances. This work involves close liaison with the Office Administrators and the Hon. Treasurer as well as the Coordinators and Trustees. My role includes everything from bookkeeping to helping with the financial strategic decisions. Day to day tasks includes the following:
  • Income - entering subscriptions, donations, grants & sales.
  • Expenditure - writing cheques, setting up bank transfers & payments
  • Payroll - paying salaries, statutory sick pay, statutory Maternity pay & other benefits.
  • Government taxes - payroll taxes (income tax & national insurance); VAT on subscriptions & sales.
  • Preparation & submission of End of Tax year forms to HM Revenue & Customs.
  • DfES grant - preparing accounts for claims
  • Gift Aid - preparing claims monthly.
  • Financial Reports - prepared monthly for Trustees.
  • Budget -preparing a yearly budget for approval by Trustees.
  • Checking & preparation of Conference accounts.
  • Financial year End- Preparation of documents & accounts for auditors
  • Attendance at Trustee meetings.

My role is 15 hours a week based at home. As with all accountancy work there is much attention to detail and adhering to deadlines, but the variety within the role makes it enjoyable and fascinating. Samantha can be contacted through the main office email.
