Local Groups

Join a Local Group to connect with others in your community

Whilst all NWR groups meet regularly for discussions, conversation and activities – where, when, how frequently they meet and what they do varies.

Some have sub-groups and arrange outings and activities, others include these activities within their main programme.

National, regional and online events

Meet NWR members from across the country at one of our events.  We have a variety of events taking place throughout the year including the online conference, NWR Walk, the ever-popular Telephone Treasure Trail, quizzes and day conferences.

The NWR National Conference is an annual event that brings together hundreds of NWR members from all over Great Britain.  Our previous national conference keynote speakers have included television presenter, Valerie Singleton, Paralympic gold medallist, Sophie Wells and Chief Constable for Hampshire, Olivia Pinkey. Our 2022 conference in Newcastle welcomed a truly inspiring talk by Jo Moseley, author of the best-selling book, Stand up Paddleboarding in Great Britain.

Online Talks

NWR members can watch live online talks delivered by excellent speakers, covering a huge array of engaging, educational and thought-provoking topics.

Our talks have taken us back in time to the Tudors, investigated the Black Lives Matter movement and provided invaluable information about Cyber Crime and how best to protect ourselves. There is sure to be something for everyone!

Many of these talks are recorded and are uploaded to our website for members to access after the event has finished.

NWR Connect

NWR Connect is a quarterly digital bulletin and is available online to read or print. You can also listen to our audio version. It features news, articles and fiction contributions from members, staff and guest writers.

NWR members also receive a monthly newsletter and weekly news and events update.

Why I joined NWR

I was invited to a group meeting – and I was hooked – such a welcome from everyone. I enjoy the outings, quiz nights, local group meetings, meetings with other groups, and regional and national conferences.

Janet Lyons

Janet Lyons

Without NWR emails, Zoom and garden meetings my life would have been very lonely during lockdowns.

Sheila Warren

Sheila Warren

NWR saved my life. In a new town, with two small children, joining NWR was like having a new family. I am not sure what I would have done without NWR.
