Northern Wilderness Revisited – Going Wild Day Conference

Wednesday 20th September, The Crown Hotel, Harrogate,

Arrive from 9.00 am for tea, coffee and pastries.  First speaker at 10.00am.  A buffet lunch will be served at lunchtime, tea/coffee and shortbread biscuits mid-morning and tea/coffee and cake mid-afternoon before you leave. 

Speakers on the day will be: 

Jo Moseley our NWR Patron – Jo lives in Ilkley, not too far away from Harrogate and will talk to us about adventuring sustainably and wild swimming – https://www.jomoseley.com 

Helen Neave – Helen who lives in North Yorkshire took early retirement from the medical profession a few years ago. She and her husband bought some land to give back to nature and have since planted 60,000 trees. She will talk to us about this new venture in their lives, her passion for nature and how it can help us all – www.makeitwild.co.uk  

Lucy Richardson – from Richmond in North Yorkshire is known locally as The Travelling Florist, she will talk to us about how she forages for wildflowers, grasses, leaves and anything else she can find that she can use to create sustainable, lasting, dried flower arrangements.  Lucy will also run a workshop for those who are unable to take part in the guided walk around Valley Gardens and you will take home a small posy. 

Sue Wood an historian from Harrogate, will lead a guided walk around the adjacent English Heritage Grade II Valley Gardens which are open to the public free of charge, this walk will include the history of the gardens.  The walk will all be on good paths, some sloping, nothing too arduous though. Sensible footwear is advisable.

Note:   If the maximum number of 25 for the walk is reached, then members will be allocated to the workshop, or alternatively, will be free to walk round the Valley Gardens without a guide.  Should the maximum numbers of 30 be reached for the advertised workshop an additional workshop will be made available for members to choose should they wish to when registering for the conference on the day.   Workshop places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. 

Book Swap – this was popular last year in Newcastle, bring any books to swap and take away some different books to read, any remaining books will be donated to charity. 

Cost £45 per person to include a buffet lunch and refreshments throughout the day.

Come and visit Harrogate, a beautiful Spa Town in North Yorkshire with good transport links from the A1, M1, M62 and a train station with LNER connections to the south via Leeds and to all areas of the country.  Harrogate has a wealth of hotels, places to stay, theatres, cinemas, things to see and do and lots of eating places as well as a busy shopping centre and of course the famous Betty’s Tea Rooms. Accommodation in the Crown Hotel is available at a reasonable rate for anyone wanting to have a short break in Harrogate. £85 per night B&B single occupancy, £95 per night B&B double occupancy.  If you don’t want to stay at The Crown, other hotels are available such as The Old Swan with its Agatha Christie connections a couple of streets away from The Crown, or Cedar Court at the top of the town near to the Stray.  The Crown Hotel is about a 10-minute walk from the station, all downhill, there are buses that run from the bus station adjacent the train station down to the Crown Hotel area of the town and lots of taxis as well.  The Crown Hotel is next door to the Pump Room Museum which made the town famous for its spa facilities in yesteryear and attracted many visitors.
