July meeting – connections to the Channel Islands

Each year the NWR headquarter’s set a country for each group to interpret as they wish. This year it was the Channel Islands. We watched the film’ Another mother’s son’ which was based on a true life story of Louisa Gould who rescues and saves a Russian who was forced into slave labour by the Nazi occupiers of Jersey during WW2. Louisa was eventually betrayed and died in Ravensbruck concentration camp. The Russian, Fyodor Buryi, known as Bill survived the occupation as others helped him when Louisa was betrayed.

It is a very moving film and there was absolute silence from our group when it finished.

We did have a break midway through when we ate a delicious bean stew typical of the island.
