Potty about Pots

A selection of pots by Katie Thompson, local Sonning Common Potter

A first experience for many of our group was had in July at our Pottery Extravaganza hosted by local potter, Katie Thompson. Katie’s proud mum Lyn is one of our group and she looked after us during the evening with non-stop drinks and nibbles while we concentrated hard on producing coil pots under daughter Katie’s expert tutelage.

We were able to learn how to mould and stretch the clay into shape using fingers and thumbs, and then to add designs such as swirls and coils before painting our designs ready for the kiln. Our pots will now be a few weeks with Katie while she puts the finishing touches to our masterpieces, which are destined as nibbles or jewellery trays, pot holders and soap dishes. Much fun was had by all, and we await the finished pieces with nervous anticipation!

Katie’s company Katie L Thompson Designs began in 2015 with a range of handmade cards and textiles, but she says ….

” My love for pottery came a little later—and quite unexpectedly. In 2017, my mum gifted me a pottery class for my 21st birthday. At first, I wasn’t sure—getting covered in clay and making small talk didn’t exactly appeal—but I quickly found myself hooked. Before long, I’d bought my own wheel and set up a home studio where I could spend every spare moment practising.”
