Our members all come from in and around the characterful town of Nantwich and vibrant village of Audlem, not far away from each other and linked by the famous Shropshire Union Canal. The group is very welcoming and friendly and there are 31 of us as time of writing (October 2021).
Up until March last year, when events overtook us, we met fortnightly in each other’s homes. Rather than have a single Local Organiser we now have an ‘open’ organising group of four, with one person being the point of contact with Head Office, we find it works well and shares the responsibility. We welcome anyone in our group to join the committee at any time, keeping the ideas flowing.
As we plough on, keeping things going after a fashion during the Covid pandemic for a second year, things are starting to feel more comfortable at last, and we are currently planning some exciting face to face activities for our new programme.
Since March 2020, and being determined not to let Covid beat us, we became adept at having meetings via Zoom, mastered the technology and the screen sharing, and created some new sub groups, a walking group and an art group, in addition to our longstanding book group. While regulations and weather allowed, we have had several coffee mornings outside in groups of six. We set up a WhatsApp group to keep communicating, and we enjoyed the terrific online programme of speakers organised by Head office, keeping up our reputation for being lively minded!
In the run up to last Christmas members took part in a ‘reverse advent calendar’, putting a food item into a box each day from the 1st of November to the 25th. Along with local WI groups nine van loads of food were sent to food banks on December 1st, and we hope to do the same this year.
The committee met last week to explore topics, speakers, outings and events to take us through to spring 2022, we already have a list of potential topics, a Spanish evening, a trip to RHS Salford next spring, and a Tai Chi demonstration to start the ball rolling. While the going is good we are kicking off with afternoon tea at a local marina where we can be inside or out, in the hopes that as many of us as possible will be together for the first time since March last year. We have put together the programme through to March 2022, obviously this could still change, but we hope it won’t!
