Yesterday evening proved very enjoyable. 13 of us shared passages from literature of many varieties and the rest of us guessed the author of each one. Some were easy to guess, others proved much more tricky. One stumped us all.
We covered :-
Frances Hodgson Burnett – The Secret Garden
Dickens – Great Expectations, Tale of two CitiesR D Blackmore – Lorna Doone
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry – The Little Prince
Graham Greene – The Power and the Glory
Pam Ayres – poem – I do, I do, I do
F. Kilvert – Kilvert’s Diary
J K Rowling, in 2 guises (herself – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone) and Robert Galbraith
Gervais Fhinn – The Other Side of the Dale
Michelle Obama – Becoming
Enid Blyton – The Wishing Chair series (introduced as very intellectual!)
Evelyn Waugh – Brideshead Revisited
Shakespeare – Othello
Oscar Wilde – Picture of Dorian Gray
Homer – Odyssey
Angela Carter – A Company of Wolves, from The Bloody Chamber (a feminist re-working of the Little Red Riding Hood story)
David Lodge – Small World
Charlotte Bronte – Villette (a well-loved one)
It was impressive how good some of us were at recognising extracts or styles.
It was an interesting selection and good to share with one another.
