Iconic Photos from around the World

Due to copyright issues we’re unable to post many of the images. These two images were taken by members.

Last week’s zoom meeting featured iconic photos from around the world. We had an eclectic mix of images. How many of the photographs detailed below can you visualise without using google? There were a few comments of ” I remember exactly where I was”. Here’s a list of images we discussed:

John F Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy travelling in the back of an open top Presidential limo moments before his assassination in Dallas Texas on 22/11/1963.

A plaque commemorating the dropping of the H Bomb on Hiroshima 6/8/1945

The Floating Tori Gate, Miyajama Island, Japan

The CIA’s Air America Huey Helicopter evacuating a long line of American citizens and allies climbing a ladder to board on 29/4/1975- one day before the fall of Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War.

A masked Queen Elizabeth II sitting alone due to Covid protocols in the quire at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on 17/4/2021, at the funeral of Prince Philip.

A male tailor in Afghanistan making blue compulsory full length Hajibs for women as required by the Taliban in the early 1970’s. One of our members was travelling in Afghanistan at that time and was invited to try one on. She said that it was impossible to see properly through the lace facial grill and your vision was restricted to the left and right. The voluminous garments were quite cumbersome and really restricted your movements.

Nelson Mandela walking as a free man form prison in South Africa on 11/2/1990 after 27 years imprisonment.

Princess Diana sitting on the diving board of the Al-Fayad yacht off Portafino, Italy. This was published on 24/8/1997, one week before her death.

A cover from the June 1985 edition of the National Geographic Magazine. A 12 year old Afghan girl with her head covered with soulful pale green eyes. She was refugee named Sharbat Gula and became the face of the Afghanistan war. We learnt that the photographer (and others) made a lot of money from the image but it did not bring Sharbat Gula much benefit.
