A small group travelled to the V & A in Dundee to see the Kimono Exhibition which runs until January 2025. The V& A’s rather striking building sits alongside The Discovery – the tall masted wooden ship that was built in Dundee for Antarctic research. They travelled by bus from Glasgow – very eco-friendly and cost effective. The Exhibition centres on the intricate story of the style, appeal and influence of the kimono which is the ultimate symbol of Japan.
The Exhibits reveal ‘the sartorial and social significance’ of the kimono from the 1660s to the present day. Included in the collection are rare 17th & 18th century examples alongside more modern creations from major designers and iconic film and/or performance kimonos – including one owned by the late, great, Freddie Mercury – see below.
The exhibition is amazing and is shown is a much bigger area than in the V&A in London. Well done V& A Dundee.
