Hello New Members of LB2
You will have heard Heather talking about national events at our meetings. This is to tell you about this year’s national conference and a further one-day event.
The conferences are an real joy. You meet lots of other women from groups all over the country as well as enjoying the events themselves.
They are arranged by local NWR groups who volunteer. This is a giant undertaking, as they will be deciding on themes and speakers as well as scoping accommodation for the conference itself and recommending accommodation for conference delegates.
This year’s national conference will be on Saturday 5 July in Telford. There is usually a dinner and a quiz on the Friday. The theme of this year’s conference is Fire. There will be two speakers in the morning, and two workshops in the afternoon. One speaker will be from the creative team which designs the annual firework/laser displays on New Year’s Eve on London’s South Bank. There are usually choices of workshops to be made.
Telford, one of the original new and expanding towns in the 1950s, has much to offer, mainly around the Iron Bridge area. Set within the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ironbridge Valley of Invention is five miles from Telford Town Centre. Stretching along the River Severn, there are award-winning museums within six square miles of the Ironbridge Gorge, widely regarded as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. It’s worth staying an extra day to visit the area.
The second event will be held in Darlington on 18 October. The theme will be Connections. This is our national theme for 2025, and the name of our quarterly digital magazine (named by Heather incidentally). Celebrating 200 years of the world’s first passenger railway, between Darlington and Stockton, the town is very proud of its connection to this major development in the history of transport.
Look out for booking information on the forthcoming weekly NWR newsletters which we hope are dropping into your inboxes.
