Our annual Summer Social was held on a pretty hot day (not quite as hot as some we have experienced this summer) but we were able to find room in the shade of the trees in Penny’s garden to set out our tables and chairs. There were 19 of us in total, including partners and friends and there was time to admire the garden and chat and have a drink before we went to help ourselves to the delicious “bring and share” spread of savoury dishes and salads.
That put an end to conversation for a while as we all tucked in (some of us going back for second helpings). The various desserts were equally mouth-watering and were soon polished off. I think everyone went home with empty serving dishes, though, as usually happens, there were a few misplaced items – one of my salad servers, for instance, ended up in someone else’s bag but was soon safely recovered. (I think the record may have been at a lunch at my house some years ago when, after everyone had departed, I discovered that a mobile phone, a scarf and a bag of water filters had all been left behind by various people.)
We were most grateful to Penny and her husband for hosting us this year for what proved to be a really enjoyable afternoon.
P.S. I failed to take any photographs of the occasion, so the illustration is an “imaginary” spread, but ours was just as good – if not better!
