A brief overview of our meeting on a red theme
Katharine – Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Only women allowed to offer their services not men.

Anne R – The Red Cross- founded by Swiss businessman Jean-Henri Dunant as a result of seeing 40,000 dead and dying in a single day’s fighting in the Battle of Solferino in 1859.

Jane – The Red Carpet – symbolised status, something to which b few people had access. After the Industrial Revolution, the red carpet was associated with power and wealth and train companies started using them for their clients to board trains. Associated with important events and VIPs eg Royalty, visiting politicians, Oscars, Grammy Award ceremonies.
Jenny L – Redheads – Irish fishermen were particularly wary of seeing a red-haired girl before leaving shore: it was a portent of bad luck. They said “Let not the eye of a red-haired woman rest upon you” for it bode ill and many fisherman refused to set sail as a result. For every soul a redhead stole they gained a freckle was a common myth. In 1254 King Louis 9th of France even suggested that sex workers should dye their hair red, so they were more easily distinguishable.

Sue Stedman – Red Pandas – also known as the lesser panda, is a small endangered mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. Teresa’s brother was a zookeeper at Edinburgh Zoo who had a newborn red panda named after him.

Red as a warning or sign of danger. Bold fiery colour. The most used colour on flags of the world.

Margaret- Red Rum – Irish champion thoroughbred steeplechaser got his name from his dam Mared and sire Quorum. Unmatched treble for the Grand Nation in 1973, 1974 and 1977.
