Book group meeting on the 7th November. 2025

We very much enjoyed this book which was mostly set in the beautiful countryside of Cornwall and was strongly connected to the community spirit of St Pirans and the arrival of one man called Joe Haak.

Joe was washed up on the beach and rescued by the local villagers. He is then considered as the local hero as he orchestrated the rescue of a beached whale. He had previously worked in Kaufmanns bank in London and was intent in surviving the likely hood of a pandemic. It was written in 2015 so the author was unaware of what was to happen a few years later! It is also a fascinating insight into the world of high finance and the knife edge decisions connected to trading and fluctuating values of commodities as the bank is teetering on the brink of collapse. ‘Intimate, funny and heart warming’ as you come to know the many interesting characters of the village and how they support one another in order to survive.

This book was retitled and is now known as ‘The Whale At The End Of The World’
