Cheese please!

The Cambridge Group planned for a British cheese tasting evening on Tuesday 20th January. By sheer coincidence it turns out 20th January 2026 is National Cheese Lovers’ Day. Colette hosted the evening, making sure everyone got a taste of all the delicious cheese on offer. Here is her account of the evening:

The group had a fun evening tasting different cheeses from around the country. Everybody brought at least one different cheese to try. We decided to start with the two red cheeses, Red Leicester and Red Fox and found them creamy with one tangier and saltier than the other. Our two different Cornish cheddars came next but we struggled to identify the differences. Moving further north, we enjoyed a crumbly, creamy Lancashire and Parlick, a mild, creamy sheep’s cheese. We moved back down to the West Country and tried soft Cornish Yarg with it’s nettle coating and a buttery, hard cheese called Wyfe of Bath, neither of which was particularly popular. We finished our tasting with two blue cheeses, Stilton and Cote Hill Blue a squishy, creamy cheese from Lincolnshire.

The two most popular cheeses seemed to be the Lancashire and the Cote Hill blue, but we all decided it was a fun evening and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
