We are one of NWR’s newest groups, having held our first meeting in October 2024 when an amazing 17 lovely ladies gathered at a popular cafe in central Barnstaple. Following a welcome from June, our local organiser, the ladies briefly introduced themselves to the group. The overwhelming reason for coming along was to meet like-minded ladies and to make new friends. To facilitate this, name badges were provided as an aide memoire and there was some discussion of ideas for future meetings.
Since our first meeting we have had the pleasure of welcoming new members to our group, and we continue to grow.
Our meetings are held at 2 pm on the second Thursday of every month in a central location. The meetings are scheduled to last about 2 hours.
Below are the meeting dates for 2025 with the topics for discussion.
- 16 January – New Year Resolutions – Past and Present
- 13 February – Valentine’s Day – Love
- 13 March – Scales – How many can you find?
- 10 April – A Picture that Changed the World.
- 8 May – Female Scientists throughout the Ages
- 12 June – Social Media. How do you use Social Media and do you think it’s affected the way we communicate with each other?
- 10 July – My Favourite song/piece of music – what’s yours and why? Bring your selection to play briefly to the group.
- 14 August – NWR National Country of 2025. The Channel Islands. Members will discuss Guernsey, Sark and Herm.
- 11 September – At the August meeting there will be a vote by those present on a selection of topics to be chosen from a short list. This will be the topic for September.
- 9 October – Your Favourite Great Woman of History and Why
- 13 November – (following Remembrance Day) Memories of Britain at war – your stories or a war poem.
- 11 December – Christmas wreath-making workshop or Christmas Traditions and their History. We will meet at 1pm to share a Christmas meal together with members bringing dishes of their choice. This will be followed by the workshop or topic.
- 8 January – British festivals and folklore to celebrate ‘Britishness’.
Our monthly meetings always include a light-hearted discussion topic, which acts as an ice-breaker and we generally find our discussions go off in all sorts of wonderful directions! There is no obligation to contribute to the discussion. We are a supportive and friendly group and understand some people might not initially wish to join in so it’s quite OK to just sit and listen – we want you to feel comfortable and to enjoy your first meeting. June or another member will try to provide an opportunity to meet you if you join between meetings so that there is a familiar face at your first group meeting.
Sub Groups
The Book Group meets on the first Thursday of every month at 2.30pm
If you like the great outdoors, you will be interested in a Walking Group which formed in the spring. June Turner will be organising this and leading the walks. We hope to cater for varying abilities so that all are welcome. For this reason, we will not have a regular day and time but June will liaise with members of the sub-group to arrange walks, days and times to suit.
We also have a coffee morning group, a lunch club, a planning group, a film and theatre group, an outside meet-up group and a stitch group. As a member, you are welcome to go along to as many sub-groups as you like!
Membership of NWR gives you access to local group meetings, local sub-groups, national online meetings, talks, exercise classes, virtual book clubs and Facebook groups. Please do contact us using the contact button above for more information and to arrange a free trial session.
