We are one of NWR’s newest groups, having held our first meeting in October 2024 when an amazing 17 lovely ladies gathered at a popular cafe in central Barnstaple. Following a welcome from June, our local organiser, the ladies briefly introduced themselves to the group. The overwhelming reason for coming along was to meet like-minded ladies and to make new friends. To facilitate this, name badges were provided as an aide memoire and there was some discussion of ideas for future meetings.

As there were so many of us, we divided into two groups to discuss the topic for the day, ‘What is the scariest thing you have ever done or seen someone else do!’ This proved to be a popular and amusing subject which led to lively discussion, much laughter and hilarity. As a group, we decided to have a Christmas tea during our December meeting on Thursday 12 December.

Our meetings are held at 2.30pm on the second Thursday of every month at the cafe located between the Cattle Market carpark and the High Street. It’s easily accessible by car or bus. The proprietor kindly closes the cafe for us and makes available her excellent tea, coffee and cakes, etc!

The 2025 meeting dates will be:
16 January – New Year Resolutions – Past and Present
13 February – Valentine’s Day – Love
13 March
10 April
8 May
12 June

Our monthly meetings will always include a light-hearted discussion topic, which acts as an ice-breaker and we generally find our discussions go off in all sorts of wonderful directions! There is no obligation to contribute to the discussion. We are a supportive and friendly group and understand some people might not initially wish to join in so it’s quite OK to just sit and listen – we want you to feel comfortable and to enjoy your first meeting. June will try to provide an opportunity to meet you if you join between meetings so that there is a familiar face at the first group meeting.

Sub Groups

A new Book Group is starting up on the first Thursday of every month, meeting at 2.30pm in the upstairs room at The Lemon Tree. The choice of book for January is The Paper Palace by Miranda Crowley Heller. Janet Haughton is organising the group.

If you like the great outdoors, you will be interested in a Walking Group which will be forming in the spring. June Turner will be organising this and leading the walks. We hope to cater for varying abilities so that all are welcome. For this reason, we will not have a regular day and time but June will liaise with members of the sub-group to arrange walks, days and times to suit.

We also hope to be able to offer outings to places of interest, visits to cultural events and regular coffee mornings.
