Oakham’s Challenge is a Thankful One

Thankful Villages are settlements in England and Wales where all their members of the armed forces survived World War I and returned home. Oakham group have set themselves a challenge to visit as many of these vilages as possible by 11 November 2018. There are 53 such villages in England or Wales, but none in Scotland or Ireland. Further, a Doubly Thankful Village is one where all their service personnel also returned after World War II.

So far on our travels we have visited about 10, taking a photograph of the commemorative plaque usually to be found in the village churchyard or on the village green. Here are a few examples:

We have plenty to keep us busy this spring and summer; fortunately we all enjoy exploring!
