On Thursday, 4 members of Crewe & District visited Peover Hall. Built in 1583 by Randle Mainwaring, it is still a family home having been purchased by the Peels in 1919 and then the Brookes in 1939.
During WW2, the house was requisitioned by the US army with General Patton in charge. Up until then there had been 2 halls but 1 was destroyed by a fire accidentally started by one of the officers. The state of the buildings deteriorated badly and a huge restoration project was undertaken by the Brookes family who still use it has their family home.—
