Research a colour – White

At our meeting on 7 August the subject was the colour White. Although not strictly a colour the group spoke individually about anything with white it the name. The topics ranged from why players have to wear white at Wimbledon, the White Lady ghost, The meaning of the word white which derives from the old Norse hwite and why it stands for purity. Ada showed us some white garments made by her Mother for her Mother’s trouseau and Celia continued the theme with a white bow taken from the back of her wedding dress. We also heard about polar bears, white paintings by Robert Rymon in the Tate, the White garden at Sissinghurst, Snow White and other fairy tales, and the white feather brigade in WWI. It is amazing how many names and means stem from that one word.
