Visit to old operating theatre in St Thomas, Southwark

Hadleigh/Southend Group visited the Old Operating Theatre in St Thomas’ Street Southwark where in 1861 Florence Nightingale founded her school of nursing. Access is gained via a wooden, spiral staircase, into a church’s roof space.  There are displays of human organs, medical instruments and a myriad of herbs.

Lots of information on operations carried out with no anaesthesia, and of the staff and patients that worked there are available to read.

We spent a long time there enjoying the experiences in the pre runner to the present St Thomas’s hospital.

We then had a pleasant stroll along the South Bank and visited Southwark Cathedral.
