
This subject led to the group sharing many diverse ideas on sculptures in various materials and discussing the experience of just looking at objects at an exhibition or of chance moments of seeing something very interesting on a walk. The meeting was inspired by a look at the work of Jem Hobbs from Horsham. Jem Hobbs – Stonemason/Carver/Restoration | Sculpture Jem now lives in Trowbridge where he has a studio. Hobbs_J_Report_2019_Final.pdf We discovered that a few of us had participated in creative pottery classes in the past and that two members had also very close connections to stonemasons. The work of Marcus Cornish was mentioned. He created the sculpture of Paddington Bear which is at Paddington Station and also a wonderful mare and foal which can be seen at the High Wood development in Horsham.
The meeting continued with an introduction on when the first sculptures existed as figures were found dating back to c 35,000 BC like the Lion Man in Germany and in particular the Venus Of Willendorf

We looked at the fantastic work of Laura Antebi who created the War Horse for the theatrical interpretation of Michael Morpurgo book Laura Antebi Wire Sculptor – The Wire Studio – Garden and home sculptures, Portraits, Paintings. Followed by looking at Antony Gormley’s installation of 100 cast-iron life-size sculptures made from 17 different moulds taken from the sculptor’s own body. We also looked at The Angel of The North

We continued sharing of ideas on sculptors and one member described an overnight stay in an Ice Hotel where fantastic sculptures had been seen and where the visit also included a sculpting workshop. We also looked at a special piece of sculpture by Louise Giblin which had been purchased directly from a meeting with Louise and the member was given a cup of tea! The most intriguing aspect of sculpture mentioned was that of Daniel Lismore who dresses in a most flamboyant way as a ‘Living Sculptor.
