Southwater walk.

Tuesday. 28th April! Just a few days to go to the enjoy the month of May as Walking Month.

A lovely walk with a surprising end at Kirsty’s wood which was a profusion of garlic. Absolutely stunning!! Sadly this wood was established in memory of Kirsty Brown a highly qualified research scientist who drowned whilst snorkeling in the Antarctic when she was attacked by a seal.

She was a remarkable young woman.

See tribute here.

On our route we stopped to admire the cottages and their Himalayan Fan Tree which was in flower; the ‘Trachycarpus fortunei’ palm tree also known as the Windmill palm. In addition to that we were impressed by the Monkey Puzzle tree which was named as such in Victorian times as it would be a puzzle for a monkey to climb!

It is held scared by the Pehuenche indigenous people of the Chilean/Argentine Andes. It’s large seeds are edible. We also saw a tree which contained a carved koala bear. A very enjoyable walk with dry footpaths through woodland. Not so in winter!
