Our August book is the story of Esme, whose father is one of the lexicographers compiling the first Oxford English Dictionary. She grows up with her widowed father; spending her days with him at the Dictionary office she becomes aware that some words are not considered important enough to be included in the Dictionary. Over the years Esme secretly collects the rejected words for her own version of the Dictionary. But the world is changing, women are fighting for the right to vote and soon Europe will be plunged into the carnage of the Great War.
