A Flash of Colour: The NWR Photo Competition 2014/15

Enter the NWR Photographic Competition for a chance to win two nights bed & breakfast for two people at the historic Steeton Hall Hotel-Hotel, gateway to the Yorkshire Dales.

The theme is ‘a flash of colour’ and the judges, artist Kate Lycett and photographer Alison Walker, are looking for inspiration, originality and quality.

Kate Lycett artworkKate Lycett, Artist
Kate Lycett is an artist living and working Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire. Her painted landscapes and townscapes explore the use of rich colours, thread and gold leaf, whilst retaining her distinct architectural style. She chose the competition title, A Flash of Colour, to inspire and encourage the art of photograph.

Kate’s background in textiles influences the patterns in her landscape art. She begins each piece by sketching and photographing outside on location, before taking her drawings back to the studio to transform them into paintings. Her current project, Lost Houses, draws from much historical research such as old photographs of historical, grand houses of the past. Kate also uses photography as a means of recording detail in patterns, such as in stonework, and also reflections.

She says: “The Yorkshire landscape fascinates me. My response to the landscape is very personal and it’s wonderful when that interpretation evokes a personal response in others. I deliberated for some time over the title before deciding on ‘A Flash of Colour’. I wanted to ensure that the title did not dictate but was wide open to interpretation. The quality is also important, particularly the focus.”

Alison Walker, PhotographerAlison Walker phorography
Alison is passionate about photography. Even as a young child she was never far from her camera. Her main focus is portraiture, with documentary photography following closely behind.  She manages her own photographic business and her repertoire includes weddings, family occasions and special events. Alison has a modern, minimalist approach to photography that emphasises the clarity of her images.

She says:“ [I love] the immediacy [of photography] – how one very special moment can be recorded forever. Inspiration is all around us. I am very much a ‘people’ person. Building an immediate relationship with the subject is vital, so that they feel comfortable. Good observation is important and not being afraid to approach someone to take a photograph. A quality photograph should have absolute focus.”

The prize is two nights stay bed and breakfast for two people at the fabulous Steeton Hall-Hotel. Submit your entry to the NWR office by the end of January 2015 for your chance to win. Please see the terms and conditions. The competition is for NWR Members only so don’t miss out – join us now!
